If I have to narrow it down to one best tip for succeeding on social media it would be to consistently provide value. It’s kind of a two-part answer because I really can’t narrow it down to just one thing!
First of all, consistency. People trust those who show up regularly and who are actively engaged on their accounts. Being consistent doesn’t mean you have to post more content, it means post regularly. Whether this is daily or 3 times a week, determine what posting schedule works for you and stick to it every single week.
The second part is to bring value. Just because you’re posting regularly doesn’t mean people want to see it! Your content should further your brand goals and message and should subsequently provide value to your audience. Whatever content your audience values is what you should be posting.
If you are consistently valuable to your audience, the trust and respect factor is there, building those loyal followers who will become your loyal customers.

Knowing your definition of success on social media is critical. For me it is traffic. Sure follower counts might be a nice vanity metric, but that doesn’t really help to move the needle in regards to bottom line objectives.
So what’s the best tip for getting more traffic on social media?
It’s really a multi-part answer, but the core of it is being consistent and recycling your evergreen blog posts.
For example, many people (including myself) create evergreen content. And because of this, we often see residual search engine traffic.
However, most people think you can only share something once on social media. So many people simply just share their blog post once and then start writing the next one.
Instead, I create a bank of social media updates around each blog post and continuously recycle them with Bulkly (works seamlessly with Buffer). Each time I write a new post, I add another round of updates to my bucket of evergreen social media updates to automatically get added to my Buffer account at set intervals.
I don’t have to worry about finding something to add to my Buffer account and I get to maximize the value of my evergreen blog posts.

I think the words “succeding with social media” can have a different meaning for different people. For me, succeeding means getting new clients.
Most people think a person must go through an entire sales funnel before becoming a customer: visit your blog, subscribe to your newsletter, read your emails, click on your link to a sales page and make the investment in your product or service. If you check the statistics on how many do these steps, the numbers are depressing.
For me, this process is much simpler. It’s something like this: I make a killer influencer roundup. A blogger sees my work on social media and sends me a private message asking how much I charge. Then they pay me to make a roundup for their site.
I’ve gotten two clients this way from Twitter and two clients from a Facebook group.
I’m very active on Facebook, especially on blogging groups where my target audience is. Groups are an excellent place to connect with other bloggers and to share your expertise. I answer questions on topics where I have experience. This increases my popularity and people start following me.
I do not have a Facebook business page, only a Facebook personal profile.
Be sure to have the Follow Function activated in your settings. This way, if you share something personal you can share it only with your friends. If it’s something for the public, such as a blog post, you share it publicly, and all your followers will see it in their timeline.
Only about 5% of people who like your FB page will see your posts. The reason is simple: Facebook wants businesses to pay for ads. This is why I always like every page that someone invites me to like – I never see their posts in my newsfeed anyway.
So, my best tip for succeeding with social media is to go where your target audience is, help them solve their problems and be real. If someone asks for some simple advice, it’s far better to give a quick tip than to tell them how much you charge for a one-hour consultation. People need to trust you before investing in your products or services, so do not behave like an unapproachable guru.

While there are lots of great tips and pieces of advice, some of which have no doubt been shared by some of the other great experts contributing here, my number one tip is this: settle on the network that represents the best balance between what you enjoy and your audience tends to use.
The fact is, in order to be successful at social media, you’re going to have to invest a significant amount of time. You’re going to have to build relationships, share great updates, and engage with your audience. You might as well do it on a network where you actually enjoy your time!
If you hate Twitter but like Google Plus, then consider making Google Plus your preferred network! Don’t start with Twitter just because someone told you to, or it seemed easier.
Then while you’re there, be sure to connect with peers and colleagues and start to develop personal relationships. Having those friendships and connections are what will make every minute you spend of real personal value.
The balance then comes in making sure that whatever network you choose still has a potential audience for you. If you’re running an accounting business, you’re not going to see much success focusing on MySpace (yeah, it’s still out there, and it’s for music-lovers now).
Most of the major social networks are likely fine – just think about the audience, the kinds of content and posts that are preferred, and where your strengths lie. If you enjoy creating video, then YouTube might make a great choice (or Twitter/Facebook/Vine/Instagram with native video uploads).
At the end of day, just make sure that you’ve determined a primary network for your business, and that it’s a network where you can enjoy your time spent.

Especially for new site owners, social media is a powerful tool to grow your following and business. The best way to benefit from social media is utilizing it for the strengths you don’t have on your own website.
When I first built my site, I considered setting up a private forum for new members of my paid product to interact and exchange information. But that would have meant trying to get people talking where no one is talking already. It’s like trying to get people to show up for a party early when no one else is there yet.
Why not take the party to the place where everyone is already talking? Everyone already has a Facebook account and is checking it daily. Take advantage of that by instead setting up your own Facebook Group. A Facebook Group is different than a Facebook Page because it behaves more like a forum than a post and comments.
Setting up a Facebook group instead of a forum on my site was the best way to get engagement with my readers of the blog. They get notified regularly that new posts are waiting for them to read. Everyone has a Facebook account already and they are visiting it regularly. It didn’t make sense to build forum traffic on my own site when Facebook had everything I needed and people were already there.
If you have a Facebook page, you should also have a Group because members of the group are notified differently (and more frequently) to new Group posts. It’s like having instant traffic to your forum that will grow more quickly and be of more value to your membership or visitors.
One word of caution: be careful relying TOO much on any one platform you don’t control completely. Always use social media to grow your following on that platform, but work to send traffic to your own site too.

My best tip is to be social. Makes sense on social media, right? If you want to steadily grow a loyal following, you need to engage with them.
So when somebody leave a comment, in most cases you will want to reply. If someone shares your content on Twitter, Facebook, wherever, be sure to publicly thank them.
I like to retweet people, not just when they share my stuff but also other content because it introduces your audience to that person and shares the content together.

The best advice I can give for succeeding with social media is to “Focus in” and to “Be Consistent”. By this I mean:
- Focus In: Choose a platform where your ideal audience hangs out and where you like to create and post content and engage. Then give this platform extra time and effort. It doesn’t mean that you need to stop posting on other platforms, but make this your focus platform for at least 3 months. You will see results in terms of quality of content, engagement, shares, traffic and even sales.
- Get Consistent: Get consistent on that platform for at least a few weeks and in doing so you will develop systems and tools and roles in your team. This will help you to run this platform more easily and in less time…while still getting good results.
Then and only then, move on to another “focus platform” that suits your audience and your marketing style. The first focus platform will keep ticking over with minimal effort and you can apply what worked to the next platform. And so on.
It’s not about being everywhere… it’s about being successful where you are focused.
